Michael Edward Miller's practice employs digital aesthetics, video game interactive tropes, and minimalist abstraction to investigate the complexities of the human condition in the context of the global digital age.
Through his work, Michael engages with themes such as identity construction, sexuality, religious ideology, privilege, corruption, mortality, loss, and the relationship between the physical and virtual spaces we inhabit. By utilizing digital technologies and interactive elements, Michael seeks to create immersive experiences that push the boundaries of traditional artistic mediums and engage viewers in a dynamic and participatory manner.
Michael's personal experiences growing up as a gay man in a highly devout Christian suburb have significantly impacted his artistic process and aesthetics. The early internet and video games served as a sanctuary from the constant judgement and discrimination he faced from his community. This refuge inspired Michael's earlier works, where he meticulously utilized laser cut mylar stencils and spray paint to create pixelated forms that capture the essence of the digital aesthetic culture of his generation.
A pivotal experience that has heavily influenced Michael's work was his role in heading a class action lawsuit against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world due to their negligence surrounding disclosure of their medication's permanent side effects. Through this experience, Michael became acutely aware of the corruption and privilege that exist within powerful corporations and the devastating effects they have on individuals, instilling in Michael a deeper understanding of mortality and the fragility of life. These themes have become integral to Michael's artistic practice, prompting continued discourse and exploration within his work. In today's political and social climate, continued discourse surrounding these themes is critical.
Michael's current artistic practice encompasses a range of mediums, including ceramics, sculpture, sound, performance, and virtual reality, which he employs to create interactive time-based installations called "Levels". Participants in these installations are referred to as "Players", highlighting the immersive and participatory nature of Michael's work.
Currently, Michael is in the process of developing responsive soundscapes that will serve as a critical component of future Levels. Sound and music play a crucial role in video games, setting the emotional tone of an environment and directing the agency of players. These soundscapes have the power to influence emotional affect and dynamically respond to the actions of the Players, creating an engaging and immersive experience.
Through his work, Michael seeks to challenge conventional ways of thinking and to empower viewers to confront oppressive ideologies and structures.
